CEREMONIAL FINALE OF THE SPRIND FUNKE EUDI WALLET PROTOTYPES

Use Case Conference in Berlin showcases the progress of the German EUDI Wallet project

With the closing conference on October 14, 2025, in Berlin, the SPRIND Funke EUDI Wallet Prototypes reached its highlight — a key milestone on the road toward digital identity in Germany and Europe. The third conference focused on the many use cases of the EUDI Wallet and on building a vibrant ecosystem that connects innovation with trust.

Since May 2024, SPRIND has been driving the development of the national EUDI Wallet project through the innovation challenge EUDI Wallet Prototypes. The goal: to prototype different technical designs for core wallet functions – and to lay the foundation for EUDI Wallets that combine security, privacy, and a seamless user experience.

During the political opening, Dr. Markus Richter, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernization, and Dr. Markus Reichel, Member of the German Bundestag, underlined the project’s strategic importance. State Secretary Richter emphasized that Germany’s EUDI Wallet project – with its open and innovation-driven approach – is setting benchmarks across Europe. Reichel highlighted its social relevance and stressed the importance of practical applications that create real value for citizens in everyday life.

At the center of the final conference were the teams Animo Solutions, Ubique Innovation, wwWallet (SUNET, Yubico, GUnet), and Lissi. Four teams, four perspectives, united by one vision: rethinking digital identity – secure, privacy-preserving, and user-friendly. Their prototypes illustrated how technological innovation can deliver tangible societal benefits.

All solutions developed during the competition will be released as open source – ensuring transparency and collaboration. The findings and insights from the Funke challenge feed directly into building the national EUDI Wallet ecosystem and advancing the German national EUDI Wallet app, developed under SPRIND’s lead together with additional project partners.

With the conclusion of the SPRIND Funke, the next phase begins. Later this year, the EUDI Wallet Sandbox will go live — a testing environment where companies and public institutions can try out the wallet in real-world scenarios for the first time. At launch, digital identification through so-called Person Identification Data (PID) will be possible. The aim is to actively involve business, academia, and public administration – and to inspire them to develop their own use cases. Because only when a diverse ecosystem with many real-life applications emerges will the wallet truly arrive in citizens’ everyday lives – and unfold its full potential.
